Our interest in cockatiels began in December 2004 when I bought Simon, a cockatiel for his birthday. We named the bird Eric and he is the bird pictured on the left hand side of the page.
Eric lived in the lounge and eventually became used to us and would sit on our hand for short periods of time. He would imitate the phone and wolf whistle. After months of whistling Happy Birthday to him, he got it and regularly whistled it, much to our amusement.
In the summer of 2005 we decided we would like to set up a small indoor aviary. We decorated the utility room in preparation for our new arrivals, bought a large cage on e-bay and in June bought 4 more cockatiels from a breeder. Two were a bonded pair of adult birds. Next we got a 12 week old cockatiel and Eric bonded with it. We were hoping it was a female but now looks like its a male. We quickly built up our aviary and at present have 11 adult cockatiels.
We had to replace the large cage for an even larger one. It has three nest boxes attached to it and plenty of room for the birds to move, although they regularly come out and have a fly around.
